The K53 learner’s licence is the first step towards getting your driver’s licence in South Africa — and it trips up a lot of people. The good news is that most failures aren’t about not knowing the material; they come from being caught off guard by the question format. That’s exactly why we built our free online K53 practice tests: so you can walk into the licensing department already familiar with what’s coming.
Practise free, as many times as you like
Our online K53 tests are completely free, with no sign-up and no payment. You can take them as many times as you want, right from your phone or computer, and every attempt randomises the questions so you get a fresh challenge each time. Each test gives you instant scoring and feedback on every answer, so instead of just getting a mark, you actually learn from your mistakes before the real exam.
Four ways to practise
We’ve broken the practice down so you can work on the whole exam or target your weak spots. The Full Mock Exam is the one we recommend — it matches the exact structure of the real K53 learner’s test and shows you a pass or fail result at the end, so you know precisely where you stand. If you’d rather focus on one area at a time, the Rules of the Road practice covers speed limits, right of way, stopping rules and overtaking; the Road Signs practice drills the warning, regulatory and information signs you’ll meet on South African roads; and the Vehicle Controls practice uses the official K53 controls diagram.
Why practising online makes the difference
The K53 learner’s test has a famously high failure rate, and unfamiliarity with the wording is a big reason why. Practising online helps you get comfortable with the style of real K53 questions, pinpoint whether road signs, vehicle controls or rules of the road are your weak area, and build genuine confidence by repeating the test until it feels easy. Ultimately, it saves you time and money by helping you pass the first time rather than paying to rebook.
What you need to score
To be issued your learner’s licence you have to pass all three sections of the written test. That means at least 22 out of 30 on Rules of the Road, 23 out of 28 on Road Signs, and 6 out of 8 on Vehicle Controls. The test is required for all Code 1 (motorcycle), Code 2 (light motor vehicle) and Code 3 (heavy motor vehicle) applicants.
