Does a Valid Licence Mean Your Driver Is Actually Safe? Why Driver Evaluations Matter

A valid driver’s licence proves someone passed a test — sometimes many years ago. It doesn’t prove they’re still a safe, confident driver today, or that they’re competent in the specific type of vehicle they’re being asked to drive. For employers especially, that gap can carry real risk. Our Evaluation of Licensed Drivers service exists to close it.

A licence is not a safety guarantee

Plenty of drivers earned their licence years ago and have picked up bad habits since — or never had ideal technique to begin with. Without an objective assessment, neither the driver nor their employer really knows where the weak spots are until something goes wrong on the road.

The legal gap most employers don’t know about

Here’s something many South African businesses overlook: under the Road Traffic Act, a driver licensed for a heavy vehicle isn’t legally prevented from driving a light vehicle. In practice, that means someone licensed for a truck could legally take the wheel of a company car or passenger shuttle without ever being properly assessed for it — despite having little or no experience in busy urban traffic or tight parking.

Why this matters for your business

If an accident reveals a driver was never assessed for the vehicle they were operating, the consequences can land on the company. There’s the legal liability of failing your duty of care, the insurance risk of a claim being refused because competence wasn’t verified, and the plain safety exposure of putting an under-prepared driver on the road. A documented evaluation gives you proof you took reasonable steps to check.

What the evaluation involves

A qualified instructor rides along with the driver on a real on-road assessment, scoring each area from poor to excellent. It covers the full range of practical driving skills — vehicle inspection, moving off and stopping, gear changes, reversing, turning, lane changes, overtaking, parallel parking, alley docking, pedestrian awareness, and overall attitude behind the wheel. Afterwards you receive a written report you can keep on file, highlighting strengths and flagging anything that needs attention.

Who it’s for

Whether you’re onboarding a new employee, reviewing your existing fleet drivers, or simply an individual wanting an honest picture of your own driving, the evaluation gives you the facts to make informed decisions. Assessments are R350 per driver and include the full on-road test plus the written report, with group bookings available for multiple staff members.

We come to you — all assessments are conducted from your premises or a location of your choice in Pretoria and Centurion. To book an evaluation, call 082 895 6503 or 012 403 0642, or email ben@mydrivingschool.co.za.
